With the short film "Goldfish" director Jacob Mendel dips into a surrealistic world, where everything can happen. It is a dream that is full of unknown. The story lures and offers mysterious, unpredictable variants of scenarios. "Goldfish" will transform your understanding of reality.
Set in Prague, where a Man, a Cat and a Goldfish are involved in a mystical sequence of events. The Cat wants to be immortal after spending his nine lives realizing that memory is a jail. The Cat sets out to become a goldfish, to become free. Why a goldfish? – Goldfish have a six-second long memory that provide for a variety of lives. Freedom is limited by memory. Carrying out his plan at any cost, the Cat's shenanigans intrigue and are a cause for reflection.
"Goldfish" is a very exciting movie and I was impressed. All of the characters are amazing creatures. Cat people are very cunning and are ready to do anything to achieve their purpose. The Man is truehearted, and feels a strong connection with his fosterling Goldfish. It is amusing that all of the adventures unfold around the Goldfish, who is just a prisoner of a situation not able to remember for more than six-seconds, what is going on.
Mendel's work is a fine line between reality and a dream. It encourages you to just jump into the marvelous fantasy and not resist, but go with the stream. "Goldfish" brings a fundamental feeling of human belonging to the afterworld. This belonging appears as uncontrollable desire to hold on to something in reality, where you used to exist.
This fabulous plot is supplemented by the scenery of romantic, beautiful views of old Prague and nice, quiet music. This movie will hold your attention until the last second.
Jacob Mendel is a talented student of the University of Michigan and has recently finished a study abroad at The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). He is young independent filmmaker, who tries to uncover the deep layers of our consciousness. His ideas are very creative and affect the unexplored labyrinths of the human mind. "Goldfish" is a surrealistic idea where imagination cannot be separated from reality. Be ready for the unbelievable. Bravo Jacob!
